Sodium metabisulfite (SMBS) or sodium pyrosulfite, commonly known as E-223, is an important disinfectant, antioxidant, and preservative agent. This salt of sulfurous acid is commercially used in meat products such as sausages and hamburgers for extending shelf lives.
